With the warmer starts to the mornings, Spring appears to be coming in fast. I am however slightly disappointed that fire season is coming to an end, and I have barely touched the sides of the two tonnes of firewood I had delivered in May. I thought for sure we would burn through the entire pile this winter. My calculations of our firewood requirements may have been a little bullish, however I will not admit this potential overestimation to Annie, given she called me when it was delivered and asked, ‘how much did you *** order Fornaro?’. I am sticking with the position that the energy efficiency of our new fireplace is significantly superior to our previous one and therefore far less wood is required, and that’s a great cost saving right there!
Every night this winter I have come home with a bounce in my step at the prospect of using my boy scout skills to expertly craft the perfect wood stack in the fireplace to achieve an even burn that dances all night. As the temperature is heading back up, my fires left this winter look numbered, and our wood stack will remain largely intact till next winter. Prepared as always, my firewood stash will be secured by a 9m x 6m tarp that we hastily purchased a few years ago from the Kilcoy Supply Store after a disastrous first night camping in the rain in what we discovered the hard and wet way was a very leaky tent, but that’s a story for another day…
Cheers, Tony.
